Czech us out Wednesday at Sokol Park!

The Cedar Rapids Municipal Band met for the first time last night to prepare for the upcoming season! Orchestra Iowa Low Brass Camp

CRMB’s own Blaine Cunningham invites all interested young musicians to participate in OI’s Low Brass Camp next weekend!

On Saturday June 6th 1:30pm-5pm at Kirkwood, they’ll hold a series of masterclasses and clinics. There will also be an exhibit area which will include some instruments for the kids to try out.  The camp fee ($50) includes a free ticket to the Orchestra Iowa concert that Saturday night.  (Program is Flying Dutchman, Debussy Nocturnes, Fountains of Rome, and La Mer.)  Then on Sunday, they’ll having a group warm-up session and mass ensemble rehearsal from 9am to 11:30am in the Opus Concert Café.  After that, it’s off to the NewBo City Market for lunch and a public performance on the outdoor stage at 1pm.  It should be a great weekend!

5th Annual Young Artist Competition

The Cedar Rapids Municipal Band Young Artist Competition is in only two weeks! This competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 who live in Linn County or attend high school in Linn County and participate in school band.

Commission Meeting 27 March 2015 @5 PM

The City Band Commission will meet in formal session at 5 PM on Friday, 27 March 2015, immediately before auditions for the 2015 season. The agenda will include:

  • Minutes of previous meeting.
  • Financial report, including proposed budget amendments for 2015 and 2016.
  • Report on new equipment trailer.
  • Report on capital campaign for bandshell.
  • Report on publicity and preparations for upcoming season.
  • Additional business raised by Commission or other attendees.
  • Logistics for auditions that evening and Saturday afternoon. (This may occur outside the formal meeting as a working session.)

The Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, a professional concert band that presents 19 summer concerts in Cedar Rapids parks, will be holding its annual spring auditions on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th in the Cedar Rapids Washington High School Band Room.

One-season openings are known for: Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. Multiple-season openings are known for: Clarinet, Bassoon, Tuba, and Percussion. Other instrument openings are possible and substitutes are needed on all instruments, particularly Oboe and French Horn this year.

A typical concert week consists of a Monday evening rehearsal and Wednesday and Sunday evening concerts. This season, there is one atypical concert week with a Saturday morning concert included in the schedule.

We encourage all qualified musicians to apply. To sign up for an audition, please e-mail, call, or text Scott Haney and leave a message indicating the following:

  1. The name of the person auditioning
  2. The musician’s e-mail address and/or phone number
  3. The instrument(s) the musician will play
  4. If auditioning on more that one instrument, whether you want the auditions back-to-back or with a break in between.

Audition Dates and Times:
Friday, March 27th 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Saturday, March 28th 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

In-person signup will begin at 6:00 PM on March 27th and at 12:30 PM on March 28th.

Auditions will be held in first-response order: those who called in advance will be auditioned first; everyone else will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Musicians will be evaluated primarily on sight-reading ability, but all are welcome to play an excerpt of one’s own choice (not to exceed 60 seconds) to warm up and get comfortable. The passage may be from a solo, etude, or piece of band music.

Commission Meeting 8 March

There will be a short Commission meeting on 8 March 2015 at 7 PM in Marquis Hall, Room 105, at Coe College. This meeting is to formally reject the equipment trailer bids and elect a Chair and Vice-Chair.
