Scott
has been a Commissioner since July 2008 and is currently an engineer at
Rockwell Collins and a part-time musician. This may not last, as he
has, in the past, worked as a juggler, a DJ and news reporter at a
commercial radio station, and news editor for his college newspaper.
His non-work hours are occupied with raising children, serving on the
board of the Hawkeye Area Grand Gaelic Isles Society, and leading the
Amateur Radio Emergency Service in Linn County. He sleeps every once in
a while, generally by accident.
He regularly plays string bass, electric bass, and tuba. He plays other
instruments to a lesser degree as the occasion arises. Scott's first
wind instrument, however, was the saxophone because he wanted to be
Boots Randolph when he grew up. His favorite Boots album was Yakety
Sax, and he played it until he literally wore out the grooves.
Scott has played with a lot of groups over the years. He plays with
the CRMB (of course!), and with a few other groups on a per-gig basis.
He also played with a local rock band called Black Velvet Elvis for a
few years. He is married to Heidi Ehrenberger Haney, who has played
with the band for more than 20 years (and whose father played the first
55 official seasons!). They have two interesting and rather challenging
children -- their son likes to compose music (just for fun), and their
daughter has set a goal of joining the CRMB someday to play her
grandfather's euphonium.
When reflecting on the CRMB, Scott paraphrases Full Metal Jacket: "This is OUR band. There are many other bands, but this one is OURS." He loves that Cedar Rapids has an official band. "We're a mobile 'party in the park,' listening is free to all, and the music is fun (despite the occasional call of 'play some Pantera!') The band provides some character to the city, and we're keeping a tradition alive without being mired in the past."
